Despite there being an old Roman road and the mention of a Gallo-Roman camp (Lan-Buben), no remains of ancient civilisations have been found in Gurunhuel.

In 1380, Gurnube features in the accounts of the beneficiaries of the diocese of Tréguier. A commune in 1790, Gurunhuel became the chief town of the Canton circa 1802.

Gurunhuel is primarily an agricultural community.

In 1795, Camus of the village of Kerniou, started cultivating the potato and Gurunhuel became one of the French originators of the vegetable (la pomme de terre).
